Spend your days counting the hours you're awake |
Thomas Barnes is everything a member of the secret service should be. Former Marine Radio Operator and all American son, he is expertly trained in everything from investigation to two different forms of hand-to-hand combat. He can pick a gunman out of a crowded room and neutralize the threat, effectively saving the person under his care. He is ready, willing, and able to lay down his career, his family, his life, and his personal hopes and ambitions if required by the United States of America. /There's a Burden you've been bearing, In spite of all your prayers/ Six months prior to the events of Vantage Point, Thomas Barnes did something that one man in a thousand has been asked to do-take a bullet for POTUS, the President of the United States and leader of the free world. He was shot twice by William Cain, former Veteran turned blue-collar worker who in a fit of insanity saw President Harry Ashton as the man-to-blame as far as his lack of employment. Barnes was shot twice, once in the shoulder and once in the lung, piercing a major artery. He died for two minutes. And when the doctor brought him back he was different. Not only physically-there were scars in places that didn't have scars before. He found himself visibly shaken, questioning for the first time the place that the ideals he was ready and willing to die for had in his life. |
The Memories that Haunt us are cherished, Just the same as the rest |
He was placed on administrative leave for three months, required to attend weekly therapist sessions where his mortality was discussed and he was diagnosed as suffering Post-Traumatic Stress Order; the mental equivalent of checking the "Occasional Blackout" Box on the application for a pilot's license. He fought the diagnosis and argued that he was fine, desperately afraid of loosing his position as chief of the POTUS Detail. He was recently reinstated on a trial basis thanks to the lobbying of his psychiatrist Doctor Joanne Burke. They saddled him with a rookie straight out of the academy, but he sees in Kent Taylor the potential that other veteran agents saw in himself. The kid will go far and for the first time in a long time he's starting to relax (only slightly). He has faith that the memories will go away because in the end this is all he knows how to do. Crippled both by his inability to think outside the box and what happened to him, he can't imagine a life without being a Federal Employee. His colleagues agreed out of partial pity, something that makes him twitch whenever stalking the halls of the agency. Welcome back is a lie if people shift uneasily when you explain your plans. They are wary of trusting him, and without trust in this business you're just another target. And when night covers the sky you find yourself doing the same Thomas Barnes was everything a Secret Service Agent should be. He was ready and willing to lay down his body to protect those he had sworn to save. Intelligent, critical, logical to a fault, he could pick out a gunman in a crowded room and possessed an uncanny power of observation. He was respected and admired, chief of the POTUS security detail. Trusted with the life of the leader of the free world, he did his job and did it admirably and lost both his security, his sense of self, and part of his grip on reality. But everything's getting better. he has a new partner, Kent Taylor (onyourwatchtom), his career back on a trial basis and a new assignment. The high profile Anti-Terrorism Summit in Selemaca Spain. He has faith that everything will go according to plan. He's been meticulous, down to the last detail. Nothing to worry about, POTUS is secure, all is well, go back to your manufactured reality. |
ARE YOU PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION? THE THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW AND THE PLACES YOU SHOULD GO. |
Thomas Barnes is a secret service agent from the movie Vantage Point. He comes in six months prior to the film, meaning that the character is spoiler free (until a month passes, standard for movies). Physically he stands at about six foot and is a rather imposing figure, the man will never be mistaken for anything but a federal agent. Tom suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder which affects him in relation to his job and somewhat in his relation to people (particularly dangerous/excitable people). I am by no means a psychiatrist or a shrink, criticism is appreciated and I am never saying that this is what people go through. What you have to consider is that this is a certain point of view (as the movie suggests). I don't own him, nor do I own Dennis Quaid or the rights to the film. This is for roleplay purposes in |
